Hemorrhoids in runners - September 11th, 2009

Hemorrhoids are a horrible discomfort for anyone to deal with especially if you are an avid runner. I tend to run on a daily basis and run in marathons at least five to six times a year. Over the past three years I have got hemorrhoids on all my marathons that were longer than 5 miles. I didn’t know if it was caused by the longer distance or if it was through the constant rubbing in that area. Let me tell you that it is excruciating pain and I would not wish this on anyone especially someone who is heavily involved in running marathons. I tried all the over the counter gels and creams and it was just temporary on relieving the pain.

It wasn’t until my last 25 mile marathon that I had to go to the hospital because of the severity of the pain I was experiencing. They had to take me to surgery that instant and cut them out to get rid of the pain. I know this is usually the last step in curing your hemorrhoids but if you can treat them with the over the counter stuff, do it. In fact, I would recommend surgery if you are constantly buying products to get rid of the hemorrhoid because in the end you might save yourself more money in the long run.
